Well then, how do I get rid of all the crap I already have?
I can melt down metal items, but I don't see how I can get rid of all these regular statues and coffers.

EDIT: I suppose I could try and trade them, but it's a long time in between caravans.

You could set a garbage zone above magma, a chasm, or just a hole you dig in the ground, then "dump" the items from the k menu.

Make sure you don't mark any masterpieces if you go with magma or the chasm, or the dwarf that created it will develop issues.

trying to figure out how to reclaim items outside. >>

Child got a fey mood, went insane and then beat a couple other dwarves to death before I had to call in the marksmen.

Don't use unskilled engravers though, the higher the skill, the better the engraving, the happier your dwarves get looking at them.

By the way, how do you assign specific items to be built? For example, I have a few masterwork statues, but when I go to the build statue menu, all I see is the material classification, not the quality.

If you're talking about the placement of statues, not the construction of, hit 'x' when you're given a choice of building materials, and the list will expand. [Dwarf Fortress]TW Fort (1) I only figured this out yesterday, myself.

Well, after some doing, I managed to get a pump system going.

A water wheel powers two pumps, one on the same level and one above. Water is transferred up two levels ( from riverbed level ) up and over the throne room, where it falls behind the throne into the giant chasm. Makes for a nice backdrop. Dwarves love waterfalls.

Still have a pile of discarded clothing where the soldier spar all day. It won't dump even though I marked it. It's all listed in ()'s, which I read means it wasn't manufactured in the fort and doesn't add to wealth. Don't know why it won't dump. =P

Try getting the soldiers back to regular dwarf duty and see what happens. I'm pretty sure it's their clothes, because I see the same thing in my barracks (despite there being chests).

When I deactivated the unit, my elite wrestler's preference screen read "This hero need not work."

No effect, though.

yeah i've been having issues with huge ammounts of clothes laying around. gets worse every time there's an attack as whenever anyone dies they seem to leave a huge pile of clothes behind, have been making giant finished goods warehouses, designating to dumping areas and trading it away and i'm just now getting it back under control. guess the fact that there are ~110 coffins filled with dwarves and my population is 48 doesn't help there. also have a shortage of bins because i started in a desert/mountain area that has no trees (woops) so i just grab wood and barrels from traders

When dwarves spar with wrestling, they sometimes grab off each other's clothes. It's like female mud wrestling, except with hairy bearded angry midgets. The dwarves still claim ownership of the clothes (which prevents them from being dumped), but they rarely go back to claim the items. It's somewhere between bug and unintended behavior. Not much to do about it now.

I guess I must have gotten a really good location. I've only lost four dwarves in like five years. Only two of them were to violence.. critter fights very early on.

Only threats I've had are kobold thieves and a babysnatcher. Created wealth is at 169,138. Maybe it's because I haven't been doing all that much crafting.

Cages. The problem with cages is that critters will not breed in them. So if you want them to breed, but stay in one place, this is the plan I came up with:

Build animal cages at the carpenter shop.
Dig out rooms to store animals ( corrals ).
Put doors on these rooms, double doors if you want to be safe. Make them Tightly Closed from the q menu.
Place cages in rooms.
Assign your stray animals to the cages.
After the animals are all carried into the rooms you want, go back and release the ones you want to breed ( the adults ).
They should now be trapped inside these rooms.

Dwarves can still let them out if they happen to open the door while the animal is close. Just reassign them to cages if this happens. Note that cages hold unlimited animals, and they can't starve. They will also grow.

This works, with one modification. My cows locked up in the room haven't bred yet. They've been standing there with ?s, because I think they are trying to path to the main meeting hall. So I set a one tile meeting area in their room, now they wander around it and seem happy. edit: You have to forbid the door totally for this to work.

Interesting, that might be a way to keep animals from breeding if you want to.

The next version is going to have some neat additions to show more detail in the legends and world histories and creature histories and stuff.

I have no issues with clothes or other owned items. I think this is mostly because all my bedrooms have cabinets in them and I see a lot of dwarf traffic with those associated with "Storing own item". At the least I believe the dwarfs are storing their spare clothing in there. There's not too much else laying around, except for the odd thing tossed in a room by I guess a slob.

Hmmmmm... Maybe putting a cabinet in the barracks would solve the thrown clothes thing. I just have chests in there.

Doesn't your workshop get cluttered then (CLT on the q screen)? Work slows down at a cluttered workshop.

Yeah if you're getting errors when caravans arrive about their wagons bypassing your inaccessible site, you need to remove obstacles from the path to your depot. Smooth boulders, build ramps, maybe build bridges or roads, etc.

I think control-D shows you what squares have wagon access. There needs to be a path to the depot 3 tiles wide.
