What is the difference between pita bread, naan, or flatbread?

Pita bread, flatbread, and naan are all in the flatbread family. There are unleavened and leavened versions of flatbread and naan and pita bread both happen to be the leavened type. The difference between naan and pita bread is the liquid to be used in the recipe whether it be yogurt, milk, and water. The milk used instead of water will, as it does for ordinary bread, yield a softer dough. This recipe yields milk and water with the addition of baking powder to yeast and the results are perfect!

How do you freeze Pita Bread?

Cool completely and store stacked on top of each other inside a gallon-sized Ziploc bag. Take as much air out as possible before sealing and defrost at room temperature.

Sorry I mean this recipe looks like flat bread cuz it’s so fluffy, so I was wondering if you have tried to fry these before? I know it’s not a normal ask, but if you’ve had those pita chips from there, then you know what I mean lol. Thank you again

I have a question. I’m looking for a copy cat recipe of long horn steak house pita chips. They come with their spinach dip, and I was wondering if this recipe might be a good try? They told me they fry the pta bread. I know this is flat bread, but the pita bread isn’t coming out the same. Any ideas? Thank you

Is there any reason I couldn’t make them smaller for appetizers, about 3 inches?

Can you make this recipe with whole wheat flour?

It should work, however, you may need less since whole wheat is a heavier flour. Kneading is the key to bringing out the gluten in whole wheat flour.

Hey I was wondering if you have ever added flavor in to these. If so what’s the best way.? I’m thinking garlic and such. Thank you. We love these. Make them often and we make them smaller for home made pizza lunchbables.

What a neat idea! Never thought of the Lunchables! If I do make them it’s usually plain pita, however, a friend adds 1 tsp Italian seasoning 1/2 tsp garlic powder to bread loaves and it is very aromatic maybe you can try that for these.

FAQs

What makes pita bread puff up? ›

A very hot oven rapidly creates the steam that puffs up the pita.

Why is my pita bread dense? ›

If your pita bread is dense, it might be because you didn't roll the dough out thin enough. Make sure to roll it out as evenly as possible. If you're having issues with it puffing up, your oven may not be hot enough. A good oven thermometer can help you troubleshoot this.

What is the difference between Greek style pita and regular pita bread? ›

Greek pita bread is one of those lesser-known flatbreads that is often referred to as “Mediterranean Pita” or as “pocket-less pita”. Whereas the more common pita bread (sometimes called “Arabic pita”) has a hollow “pocket” that is usually stuffed, Greek pita bread is soft, slightly thicker and has no pocket.

Why is my pita bread not puffing up on the stove? ›

Undercooking: If pita bread is not cooked for long enough, it may not rise properly and form a pocket. The dough needs to be heated enough to activate the yeast and cause the bread to puff up and form a pocket. Handling: Pita bread needs to be handled gently to avoid compressing the air pockets inside the bread.

How do you keep pita bread soft? ›

You could also lightly coat the top of the dough with vegetable oil if the bread is of a variety that won't be negatively affected by the oil. The baked bread can be stored in a plastic bag after it has cooled to room temperature, which will prevent. You could also cover it with plastic wrap, instead.

How sticky should pita dough be? ›

Knead – Turn out onto a clean surface and knead for 5 minutes. It will get less sticky as you knead. If it's too sticky to knead, sprinkle with a little flour and continue kneading. Dough should be soft and tacky to the touch.

Does pita bread get soggy? ›

Other times the pita gets all soggy at the bottom because it can't hold up to the juices and dressings, a travesty. But it doesn't have to be this way. On a recent trip to Turkey, senior food editor Andy Baraghani witnessed a genius fix for the soggy pita epidemic while watching a vendor stuff shawarma.

In what way of cooking does pita bread need to puff up a pocket which is intended for stuffing? ›

Pita is cooked directly on the floor of an oven, or on a pizza stone or steel in a home oven. The pocket results from steam generated inside the pita as it hits the hot surface. Because the pita is so thin, the outer crust sets very quickly, and the steam on the inside expands, forcing the top and bottom apart.

Why didn't my bread puff up? ›

Was the dough kneaded properly? Dough may not have been kneaded enough. Kneading 'exercises' the gluten in the bread and gives it the elasticity to hold in the air bubbles produced by the yeast. It is these air bubbles that cause the dough to expand and rise.
