Choosing Colors for your Crochet Blankets

While you wait for the pattern, you can get on with the lovely task of choosing your yarn and colors!

For my crochet blanket, I picked 11 balls of Stylecraft Special Aran in various shades, complemented by 4 balls in a main color.

Crochet Studio Appwas a game-changer for planning the color scheme. You can download the app on your phone or tablet and it is great fun to use.

You can find inspiration anywhere for your colors. I choose an image with colors that I loved and uploaded it into the app. I changed the filter to the yarn I wanted (they have so many yarn brands to choose from!) and the app generated the image below.

I then played around adding and removing yarn shades until I was happy.

Design your Crochet Blanket

It’s color randomizer tool is fantastic, ensuring a harmonious blend of shades. Just input your 11 colors and a main color, and you can see your blanket taking shape.

Each square has 6 rounds, the final round being your joining color. You can play around with color schemes until you are happy. Print out your layout and you have a step by step plan to follow. The app even allows you to assign the main color for the final round of each square.

Here is my final color choices for my blanket. I crocheted this blanket last year and I loved having it all planned in advance. I did sometimes change a color here and there but having the printed chart was amazing, and I knew that I would have enough yarn to use up all my colors.

Blanket Size

  • Each square measures 7 x 7 in [18 x 18 cm] Gauge will depend on yarn used and individual tension
  • Finished Blanket has 63 squares (7 x 9) with a border and is approx. 51 x 65 in [130 x 165 cm]

Material List for Blanket

I choose Stylecraft Special Aran for my blanket. I love this yarn for its quality and wearability. It creates a weighty blanket and as it is 100% acrylic, it is washable and durable. I purchased my yarn from Woollycastle.ie

Use any worsted weight yarn you wish and I am sure you can color match the shades in the blanket in any brand with a big selection of colors (or have fun choosing your own colors!).

Here is a list of the yarn and materials I used:

  • Stylecraft Special Aran – 100% acrylic/214yds/196m/10
  • 4 balls Sage (MC)
  • 1 ball each (CC): Spice, Pomegranate, Mustard, Pale Rose, Mocha, Cream, Lipstick, Fondant, Teal, Gold, Copper
  • 5mm & 5.5mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle

Can I Make this a Crochet Scrap Blanket?

You can! You can use any other worsted weight or aran weight yarns from your yarn stash. I choose a worsted weight yarn as I wanted my blanket to be heavy and cozy.

If you are using yarn scraps I suggest you include 4 balls of a main color and your finished blanket will then have a cohesive look. Try and use yarn of a similar brand and weight to ensure your tension stays the same.

Aim for about 400g of the main color and between 900g to 1000g of different colors. Check out the materials list for the exact colors I used to replicate this beautiful blanket.

You can also use a dk weight yarn if you wish. Your square will be slightly smaller. I suggest if using a different yarn weight, you crochet one square in your chosen yarn and check measurements. You will be able to work out how many squares you need to make a blanket in the size you want.
