What Does an Irish Lemonade Have in it?

Irish whiskey and lemonade are the main ingredients. For a sweeter co*cktail, you’ll make it with club soda and grenadine.

For a stouter or full body co*cktail, you’ll make it with Bitters and Ginger Beer ingredients.

We’re going to cover both recipes so you can decide which one you like best!

Why is it called Irish Lemonade?

It’s simply because this drink is commonly made with Irish whiskey, such as Jameson.

Although, if you have a favorite bourbon or whiskey, you can use it instead of Jameson.

What Does Irish Whiskey Taste Like?

Irish whiskey is less sweet than other whiskies. It tends to have a warm, citrusy and spicier flavor.

Jameson Irish whiskey has been around for over 200 years with it’s distinctive ingredients and process that’s triple distilled. A fun fact, for a whiskey to be called Irish, it must age for at least 3 years in Ireland.

Irish Lemonade Ingredients (Sweeter Recipe)

IRISH WHISKEY – Jameson Irish Whiskey is probably the most well known, but here’s a little secret – this drink tastes just as delicious with your favorite bourbon or Canadian whisky

LEMONADE – use your favorite pre-made lemonade brand or make your own with fresh squeezed lemon juice, sugar (or simple syrup) to get the lemonade mix that you enjoy best.

GRENADINE – a splash of Grenadine syrup adds a little fruity and sweetness to this delicious co*cktail.

TONIC WATER – for a little effervescence, tonic water adds the bubbly and evens out the sweet lemonade flavors. You can also use club soda.

GARNISH – add a lemon wedge and maraschino cherry for an added sweet bite and pop of color.

How to Make Irish Whiskey Lemonade

This first version is the “sweeter” recipe.

STEP 1: Add ice to your co*cktail glass, filling about 1/3 of your highball glass.

STEP 2: Add Jameson Irish Whiskey.

STEP 5: Add crushed ice to almost fill your serving glass, leaving just enough room for the tonic water.

STEP 6: Top with tonic water or club soda for a little bubbly effervescence from the carbonation.

STEP 7: A quick squeeze of lemon juice on top, then garnish with lemon slices and a maraschino cherry.

IRISH WHISKEY – we’re using Jameson Irish Whiskey, but if you only have your favorite Canadian whisky or bourbon on hand, that will work perfectly.

LEMONADE – sweet and tart, use your homemade recipe or favorite pre-made brand of lemonade.

BITTERS – adds a robust and fuller taste with these bitter herbs and spices to balance out the sweet flavors.

GINGER BEER – ginger beer is a non-alcoholic carbonated drink, much like ginger ale, but spicier.

GARNISH – a lemon wedge and a sprig of fresh mint. The aroma from the mint as you take a sip heightens the senses and makes this recipe even better.

Directions

This second variation has a stouter taste because of the ginger beer and Bitters ingredients. The first 3 steps are the same as in the recipe above.

STEP 1: Add ice to your glass, filling about 1/3 of your highball glass.

STEP 2: Pour in Jameson Irish Whiskey.

STEP 3: Add lemonade.

STEP 4: Now, here’s where it gets different. Add 4 drops of Bitters and stir well.

STEP 5: Add a little more ice.

STEP 6:Top with ginger beer for added carbonation and a delicious ginger flavor that mixes so smoothly with the lemon flavor.

STEP 7: Garnish with a lemon slice and a couple sprigs of fresh mint.

TIPS

  • You an use a co*cktail shaker to mix Jameson and other ingredients quickly. Simply mix all ingredients in the co*cktail shaker except the carbonated ingredient your using (either tonic/soda water or ginger beer). Shake vigorously and strain mix over ice in a co*cktail glass. Then top with the carbonated ingredient.
  • You can also substitute a sprig of rosemary for mint. It provides a different aroma than mint but also pairs very well with ginger.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with an Irish Lemonade! Choose the sweet version or the spicy version, either way you can’t go wrong.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Cheers!
